Surveying the Rubble

And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.” (Nehemiah 2:12, KJV)

Under the quiet cover of darkness, while the rest of the city slept, Nehemiah slipped out through the Valley Gate. He didn’t make a grand public announcement or parade his plans in front of the crowds. Instead, accompanied by only a few trusted companions, he rode out under the moonlight to conduct a quiet, secret inspection.

As he surveyed the broken walls alone in the stillness of night, God walked beside him, granting him the sharp discernment needed to accurately evaluate the destruction. Nehemiah needed a clear, unfiltered understanding of the exact conditions of the ruined walls he was called to rebuild. Before we attempt to repair any brokenness, whether in our own hearts, our relationships, or circumstances around us; we must follow Nehemiah’s lead and survey the rubble with open eyes and discerning hearts.

Taking an Honest Inventory

To rebuild effectively, we have to take a careful inventory and check the integrity of the original foundation. With God’s help, we need spiritual clarity to see if there is any lasting value left in the rubble or if there are repairable cracks in the structure. In some cases, we might discover that a minor patch-up job simply won’t cut it; we need God’s spiritual bulldozer to sweep away the debris entirely so we can start fresh on the sure, unshakable foundation of Jesus Christ.

Counting the Cost and Studying the Blueprint

Riding among the ruins also gave Nehemiah the chance to start tallying up the exact materials required to rebuild the city walls. Jesus echoed this principle in Luke 14:28 when He asked, “For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”

The exact same precept applies to anyone desiring to build a life of godly integrity and Christian character. If we want to grow more like Christ, the very first step is ensuring that Jesus’ precious blood has been applied to our sinful souls. Beyond that initial step of salvation, we must dedicate daily effort to understanding God’s plan for our lives.

Worn Plans and Heavenly Provisions

Much like a modern architect drafting detailed blueprints, Nehemiah likely sketched out drawings of the construction work that needed to be carried out. Construction workers must constantly refer back to the master drawings throughout the building process to ensure everything aligns with the architect’s design. By the time the building is finished, those paper plans are usually marked up, smudged, and well-worn from daily use.

In the same way, as we navigate our daily walk with God, our Bibles ought to be well-worn from constant reading, and our knees calloused by earnest prayer. That is how we ensure we are building according to God’s blueprint, laying up eternal treasures for when we reach heaven’s gate.

Just as king Artaxerxes provided the physical materials Nehemiah needed to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls, our King Jesus provides every spiritual resource we need to construct a vibrant Christian life. In return, He asks for our full surrender; that we take up our cross daily and follow Him.

Seed for Thought: Is there an area in your life where you have been trying to build on a cracked foundation or guessing at the blueprint? Take time today to get alone with God in prayer, open His Word, and ask Him to reveal what needs to be cleared away so you can build on Christ alone.

Reflect and Respond

  • Surveying Your Foundation: Have you taken time recently to quietly survey the state of your own heart or relationships, or are you ignoring the cracks in your spiritual foundation? Ask God to give you open eyes and discerning judgment as you evaluate your spiritual health.
  • Consulting the Blueprint: Is your Bible well-worn from daily consultation, or has it sat gathering dust on a shelf? Consider how constantly referencing God’s Word keeps your life aligned with His master plan.
  • Surrendering to the King: King Jesus has provided everything you need to build a life of godly character, but He asks for total surrender in return. What cross or burden are you being called to pick up today as you follow Him?

Wait Upon the LORD

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

The phrase “wait upon” means to eagerly look for or linger in expectation. Waiting on the Lord renews our strength by compelling us to rely on God’s power. In the haste of life, we can often neglect time with God. We fill our schedules, rushing from one task to the next, yet we wonder why we feel drained, weary, and disconnected from God.

What we need is to slow down, wait on the Lord, and spend time with Him in prayer. When we wait on God, we open our hearts to receive His strength and peace. As we meditate on His Word, we are refreshed and renewed. Our minds are no longer cluttered with the cares of this world. We experience the presence of God as we surrender our agendas to Him.

Waiting on God through prayer deepens our relationship with Him. It realigns our priorities to what matters most – connecting with our Creator. When we regularly devote time to seek God’s face, we are transformed and our spiritual strength is renewed.

Let’s determine to build our prayer life through daily quiet times with God. Whether it’s 20 minutes in the morning, an hour walk with Him in the evening, or breath prayers throughout the day, time with God nourishes our soul. As we wait on Him, God renews us to walk faithfully with Him.

Lord, we desire to know You more. Teach us to regularly wait on You, to be still before You in prayer. Renew our strength as we seek Your face. Help us prioritize time with You, for apart from You we can do nothing. Fill us with Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thank You Jesus

“I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.” (Psalm 9:1)

In our journey of faith, we often find ourselves seeking miracles, looking for grand signs that will affirm our beliefs. But sometimes, it’s the smallest, everyday moments that hold the power to kindle profound joy in our hearts.

My friends, our path to gratitude and joy begins with mindful appreciation of the daily blessings that surround us. It’s easy to overlook these gifts, but they are like precious gems waiting to be discovered. It might be the warmth of the morning sun, the laughter of a loved one, or the simple taste of a well-cooked meal. Each of these is a marvelous work of the Creator.

As we start our gratitude practice, let us remember that it’s not about the grand gestures but the little things that light up our hearts. Try this: today, pause for a moment, take a deep breath, and think of three things you’re grateful for. They can be as humble as a gentle breeze or a cozy blanket. When we express our gratitude with our whole hearts, we begin to uncover the joy hidden in these small, everyday wonders.

Remember, my dear friends, that as we foster gratitude, we not only find joy in the little things but also draw closer to our Heavenly Father, who delights in our praises and showers us with His boundless love.

In this journey, we invite God to help us in fostering our gratitude and finding joy. Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before you with open hearts, seeking the joy in the little things that you’ve surrounded us with. We thank you for the daily blessings that may often go unnoticed. Help us, O Lord, to develop a mindfulness that appreciates your marvelous works in every moment. May our gratitude practice be a testament to your love and grace. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Living in God’s Word

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32 ESV)

In a world filled with noise and distractions, it can be challenging to stay grounded and connected to our faith. However, by choosing to live in God’s Word, we can find solace, guidance, and unwavering truth. When we abide in His teachings, we embark on a journey of discipleship that leads us closer to Jesus.

Living in God’s Word means more than just reading the scriptures; it means allowing its wisdom to shape our thoughts, actions, and interactions with others. It is through this intentional immersion that we begin to understand the depth of His love and purpose for our lives.

As disciples of Christ, we are called to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. By embracing His teachings and embodying His grace and compassion, we become vessels for spreading His light in a world desperately in need of hope.

Let us remember that living in God’s Word is not a solitary endeavor but a communal one. As we gather with fellow believers and engage in heartfelt discussions about scripture, we strengthen our faith and encourage one another on this transformative journey.

Today, let us recommit ourselves to abiding in the truth found within God’s Word. Let us seek understanding, wisdom, and guidance from its pages as we navigate life’s challenges. May our lives be a testament to the power of living according to His will as we strive each day to reflect the love of Christ within us.
